Kids In The Kitchen…Sweet Turkey Treats

Anyone got candy corn left over from Halloween?  It doesn't lay around at my house either but it makes a great beak for these delicious MoonPie Owls that your kids will be proud to present to your Thanksgiving guest.

MoonPie and Oreo Cookie Owls

Little hands will enjoy twisting the oreo's apart, spreading chocolate sprinkles, and using melted chocolate to glue all the parts together.  Look at those sweet little chubby child hands. I love it.

Sweet Edible Owl Treat's

The finished product may not be perfect but they will be adorable and 100% edible. You do end up with a leftover side of a cookie but I'm sure your household chocolate lover can help you get rid of those.

Do I see some cookie crumbs on that cute little smile?  That's half the fun when you are working with kids.  Realize it is going to get messy and they are going to be nibbling as they work on their creations.  I consider these activities "playing with food".  My purpose for these activities is for them to have fun and use their creativity.  The delicious treat is just a bonus.  Their proud faces are priceless.

I found the idea in a Southern Living magazine several years ago.  You can see the page I tore out in one of the photographs.

Here's what you will need:
A box of MoonPies
A package of Oreo cookies(for whites of eyes)
Chocolate morsels(for melting and glue sing)
Candy Corn(for beak)
M&M's(for dot in eye)
Chocolate sprinkles(for a feathery brow)

Open MoonPies from wrappers.  Twist one chocolate cookie off of the Oreo and discard. Melt chocolate morsels in microwave or in a double boiler.  Apply melted chocolate to the backs of two Oreo cookies and stick them, with the icing side up, to the moon pie for eyes.  Apply a little chocolate to an M&M and add one to each of the eyes.  Do the same with the candy corn and position for the beak.  With the back of a spoon, spread some melted chocolate on the moon pie above the eyes. Sprinkle this area with chocolate sprinkles. Let them sit until chocolate sets and you are done.

I would love to hear about some of the cute food treats you do with your kids or grandkids.  Feel free to share your ideas in the comment box.

Have fun in the kitchen.   -  Marianne
