As fate would have it the weatherman forecast a day of accumulating snow across our state on the very day I had set aside for my second trip to Fearrington's Annual Folk Art Show. Stress mounted as I tried to decide if I should take the one hour trip over to Pittsboro, NC. Sensing my stress and true desire not to miss such an occasion my in-house knight in shiny armor offered to chauffeur me safely there and back. It took about two seconds for me to enthusiastically accept the offer. An additional benefit would be that with both of us there we could make a joint decision on any purchases. We enjoyed watching the falling snow as we headed out and returned from our adventure.
It was great to see artist that I had met last year and to also discover a few new artist. Check out last years blog to see works from and find links for: the coolest artist there Athlone Clarke, my husbands favorite at the show Jackie's Folk Art, make you smile work by Tim and Tina Kluttz, and a few others I think you will like. Once again all the artist were approachable and more than willing to talk with you about their work. It was interesting to see what was new from each artist. For some reason I thought I would mostly see the same things I had seen before. I should have know better. Artist are constantly evolving, trying new things and pushing their own boundaries. I have to be perfectly honest here. I envy what I perceive is the lifestyle of an artist. As I walk around and talk with them I want to soak up their laid back vibe, creative enthusiasm, and stories of how and what inspired them.
Once again I was drawn to the work of Danny Doughty. I fell in love with the geese paintings he brought to this show and can see a place in my home for one in the future. Of course his booth was filled with his works of the women of the small fishing village he grew up in. What I like most about his work is the richness of color. Check out his works below.
Shortly after entering the show we met Crystal King who is from Seagrove, NC, a small community near our home that is well known for pottery making. Learn about Seagrove's history of pottery making here. Crystal is the owner of Crystal King Pottery. There were a lot of pieces from her Biblical Collection and Animal Sculptures. I would enjoy meeting Crystal again and having more conversation with her. She was non-stop busy in her booth so that would have to wait.
I fell in love with these scripture pots. The glazes were beautiful. The scriptures on the pot with the sparrow were from Matthew 10: 29, 31, 42. Scriptures that are near and dear to my heart.
The Lion and the Lamb. One of the most powerful images and scriptures that relay what God can do.
Animal Sculptures
Noah's Ark was truly amazing and definitely a collector's piece.
One of my favorite pieces was this rabbit. The body was finished in a flatter glaze which Crystal said was a new glaze for her. I think it will be a big hit. Right after I took this picture a lady swept him off his pedestal to purchase him and take him to his new home.

Next we met Jackie Macleod who had the most unique metal works and a lovely Brittish accent. We we instantly drawn in by a little industrial style side table. Sadly it was sold. Check it out below. She said the piece attached to the side of it was an old sump pump.
As we moved into her booth and continued conversation we noticed this really cool floor lamp. We learned that the shade was fashioned from an old tractor grill and that she called it the X-Ray lamp. She explained that the tractor grill reminded her of ribs on an X-Ray and she laughingly shared that she was a doctor in a former life. I sure am glad she is currently following her artistic endeavors because her items were so interesting. She does a great job of repurposing items into functional art and giving them a new life.
Before you start checking online to see if it is available I will go ahead and let you know we bought it. We had only started down the first row of vendors when we saw it but we knew if we waited to came back later to purchase it would be gone. We were glad we did not hesitate. We left it there while we continued through the show. When my husband went back to get it and carry it to the car he was stopped by four different people who wanted to share with him that he had gotten one of the best pieces of the show. Sometimes you just know. I will put a few more pictures of the details of the piece at the end .
Mirror, candle stick, and wall sconce all out of repurposed materials.
All and all we had a great day. We took home a few treasures and dream of adding others in the future. I was then treated to some great barbecue and ushered safely home. Turns out the snow was a beautiful background to our day. The icing on the cake. - Marianne
Keep reading to see more details on the lamp and the special gift a Valentine birthday girl received.
The lid that covers the shade has perforations and creates a pattern of diffused light on the ceiling.
Since it has a flat back it works perfectly in places where a regular shaded lamp would not have worked.
Just checking out the scripture pot before I wrap it up for a birthday gift.
