I have pomegranates growing in my yard. This was very much a surprise to me when my husband showed them to me on the bush under my bedroom window. How could I not know we had a pomegranate bush? He explained that he planted it about three years ago and had forgotten about it himself until it finally yielded fruit this year. The presence of my very own poms reminded me of all the times I have used them for decorating and especially the time I used them in a tablescape for a good cause.

These are the pomegranates growing in my yard. They are really pretty.
The event was the annual Asheboro Junior Woman’s Club Table Top Event which supports the Girl Scouts of Randolph County. The club invites individuals to decorate a table top with a theme of their choosing. The results are a fabulous array of creative and inspiring tablescapes.
My style is very eclectic. I like to mix and match things. I believe this style provides a lot of interest and warmth, more of a collected look rather than a bought all at one time feel. I had a neutral linen table round made that would fit a table to the floor, later, in my house. This size translated into a topper for the large table used at the event. Choosing a neutral color allows you to use it again and again no matter what the color scheme. I wanted to add color to each place setting so I bought these aqua blue kitchen towels to use at each place and simply placed them under the plates and then let them drop over the edge of the table.
The theme of my table was "an afternoon with friends" thinking of a warm midwinter get together of friends. I mixed a high style Kate Spade June Lane plate with a more casual pottery like neutral plate with raised decoration. The unique flatware is by Gourmet Settings Inc. which is often available at Home Goods. For the napkin decoration I used birds and ribbon from a craft store and sticks from my yard.
Round tables can be challenging because you want every person to have a good view of the decorations. You want to be sure and fill in all the way around your arrangement. It is difficult to see from these photos but the glassware was a stunning addition to the table. The bowls of the goblets looked like cracked glass and the edges were slanted. These were purchased at Pier 1 Imports.
This event is held in February so I used a color combination that included the blues of ice and water, reds of a cozy fire, and the browns of a barren winter. The bird's houses remind us of the warmth of shelter and home.
The whole inspiration for the scheme started with the basket full of pomegranates that I had used on my kitchen counter at Christmas. I did try to buy fresh poms for the event but found out, much to my disappointment, that they were no longer in season. I continued to add the red with branches cut from the winter berry bushes in my yard. I'm not sure why the birds had not eaten them yet. Maybe to be kind because they knew I would need them. The mossy sticks were collected from the ground underneath another tree in my yard. The fabric in the center of the table was a scrap piece of fabric from another project.
This little bird house is my favorite. I bought it years ago at the furniture market. It is made from reclaimed materials from an old barn. How great when we can give old things a new life.
Designing a creative tablescape is as easy as rounding up a few of your favorite things, adding a little nature, and choosing an inspired color combination.
